What an Odd Tale is this… (Ajeeb Dastan Hai Yeh…)

– Known as an evergreen song, from Hindi Film Dil Apna Aur Preet Parai (1960)

In continuation to my tribute to Queen of Melody (Lata Mangeshkar Ji). It required a choice of song that can convey both the sadness and happiness in one spirit. You don’t want someone to leave, yet you want to be happy for them if they’ve chosen to be with someone else. It’s their choice or compulsion after all to leave or to not be with you due to whatever incident. Similarly, it’s your choice too of course to continue loving if you know what you did create together was rare indeed and it can’t be replaced with anything else.

Translation:

Quite an odd tale is this…
how it ends, way it cared to begin.
Sort of junctures that it arrived,
Fathom I not, nor can you, it seems.

Howcome along with the glow of light,
there’s a mist too around the lamp?
What dream am I now encountering,
haven’t I woke-up from the nap?

Compliments to you, of course,
you made it as someone’s beloved.
Grew this close to one individual,
everyone else has become faded.

Carrying someone’s hand-in-hand,
you make now a new safe-heaven.
Whenever this evening will come now,
I’d pay an ode of remembrance.

– Dedicated to all the lovers who parted ways in a bittersweet manner.

Even just to be in a state of love, to matter for someone, to be recognized as someone’s soul-mate, or to be acknowledged as someone’s missing piece of the puzzle we all call life… is a matter of greater fortune.
We often tend to ignore this in pursuit of a physical union, which albeit if/ when necessary, can never be enough to stop anyone from loving someone, since one whom you love garners a life inside you as well.

Lata Ji, you are indeed one such person who will continue to live inside us.

Original:

Ajeeb daastaan hai yeh
Kahan shuru kahan khatam?
Yeh manzilein hain kaun si?
Na woh samajh sake na hum

Yeh roshni ke saath kyun
Dhuan utha chiraag se?
Yeh khuwab dekhti hoon main
Ke jag padi hoon khwaab se

Mubaarakein tumhe ke tum
Kisi ke noor ho gaye
Kisi ke itne paas ho
Ke sab se door ho gaye

Kisi ka pyaar leke tum
Naya jahan basaoge
Yeh shaam jab bhi aayegi
Tum humko yaad aaoge

Original lyrics written by Hind-Urdu poet and lyricist: Shailendra
A soulful lo-fi
