Embrace me, Oh beloved… (Lag Ja Gale…)

– Known as an evergreen song, from Hindi Film Woh Kaun Thi (1964)

In continuation of my tribute to Queen of Melody (Lata Mangeshkar Ji). This one required a choice of song that conveys the melancholy of the last union… since life is unpredictable, we sometimes don’t know which turn it may take. Especially when we know we are making a deliberate choice that goes against what our heart wants and our soul craves.

Translation:

Embrace me… Oh my beloved,
this night’s silver may not occur again…
Perhaps, later in our lifetime,
these paths would not cross again…

We are quite blessed today,
to have these moments with us…
Observe me, up close all you want,
before fades away all imminence…

Who knows, if our fates will
get a chance to be ever-aligned again…

Perhaps, later in our lifetime,
these paths would not cross again…

Come close and sit beside me,
as you may not get to see me again…
Embrace me tightly in grip of yours,
and just let me be there to lament.

Who knows, when these eyes would
confess in the same manner again…

Perhaps, later in our lifetime,
these paths would not cross again…

– Dedicated to all the lovers who’ve knowingly experienced meeting the beloved for one last time.

Even just to be in a state of love, to matter for someone, to be recognized as someone’s soul-mate, or to be acknowledged as someone’s missing piece of the puzzle we all call life… is a matter of greater fortune.
We often tend to ignore this in pursuit of a physical union, which albeit if/ when necessary, can never be enough to stop anyone from loving someone, since one whom you love garners a life inside you as well.

Lata Ji, you are indeed one such person who will continue to live inside us.

Original:

Lag ja gale ke phir yeh
Haseen raat ho na ho…
Shayad phir iss janam mein
Mulaqaat ho na ho

Humko mili hain aaj yeh
Ghadiyaan naseeb se
Jee bhar ke dekh leejiye
Humko qareeb se

Phir aap ke naseeb mein
Yeh baat ho na ho…
Shayad phir is janam mein
Mulaqaat ho na ho

Lag ja gale… ae… ae…

Paas aaiye ke hum nahin
Aayenge baar baar
Baahein gale mein daal ke
Hum ro lein zaar zaar

Aankhon se phir yeh pyaar ki
Barsaat ho na ho
Shaayad phir is janam mein
Mulaqaat ho na ho

Lag jaa gale ke phir yeh
Haseen raat ho na ho
Shaayad phir iss janam mein
Mulaqaat ho na ho

Original lyrics by: Raja Mehdi Ali Khan
A reprised version of the song featured in one of the prominent Hindi Films of the latest times: Ae Dil Hai Mushkil
The film ponders on themes of unrequited love and the importance of soul-mate that can be found even in a platonic friendship.
