In my heart, it’s you… (Dil Mei Ho Tum…)

– An extremely melodious song from the Hindi film Satyamev Jayate

Bappi Lahiri (“Bappi Da”), known widely for his contribution of melodious compositions in Hindi Cinema passed away today at age of 69. I along with my siblings have grown up hearing his songs. This translation is a small tribute to the legend.

Translation:

In my heart, it’s you,
In my eyes, only you…
Tell me, how shall I love you?

Shall I wish to you or
Should I surrender to you?
Whichever way you tell me,
I shall love to you…

Loved one, oh my loved one…
Know this, oh my loved one.

It’s your companionship I got,
At once I desire to leash my heart.
Don’t want anyone to be envious,
I shall keep you hidden in my heart.

Tresses of mine,
Eye-lashes of mine,
are your refuge
to attain, sweetheart.

Loved one, oh my loved one…
Know this, oh my loved one.

Dreams of bliss they exhibit,
Our eyes so enchanted,
What’s keeping us apart now,
it’s together we have landed.

All the time,
a fear I contain,
from you
I don’t get stranded.

Loved one, oh my loved one…
Know this, oh my loved one.

Sad version:

I was aloof and quite distant.
My heart then called your name.
Your memories did tease me,
I had no way to refrain.

The misery of world,
I try to put up with,
The misery of distance,
I can’t sustain.

Loved one, oh my loved one…
Know this, oh my loved one.

Observed throughout in the folk tales,
Lovers bonded go through strain.
Perhaps, one wasn’t much of a sane,
who created the love and its pain.

I get scorched whether I get slain.
Yet I am to keep singing your praise…

In my heart, it’s you,
In my eyes, only you…
Tell me, how shall I love you?

Shall I wish to you or
Should I surrender to you?
Whichever way you tell me,
I shall love to you…

Loved one, oh my loved one…
Know this, oh my loved one.

– Dedicated to the loved ones who remain bonded even when parted…
