Heart craves once more (Dil dhoondhta hai phir wahi)

Another one of my very favorite songs, once again something written by the poetic genius of Gulzar sb. Simply in-comparable the way rhythm of the song, words of the poem flow, it’s beyond marvelous. Rendition above is from the film and it is sung by Lata Mangeshkar and Bhupinder Singh.

The song is from Gulzar sb’s own written and directed film: Mausam (1975). Literal meaning of the film’s name is ‘Season’, and it’s this very song in which he has covered the gist of the film: ‘The nostalgia of seasons (Fall, Summer and Winter) as they once used to be in presence of a first love’. This song is indeed one hell of a time-traveling machine. One more thing very special about this sonnet is that Maestro (Guru ji) Gulzar sb actually borrowed the first verse from the Grand Maestro (Dada Guru) Ghalib‘s ghazal, to start this one. What an awesome and rare combination once again to create such a masterpiece. More than a year ago I too under a similar spell and same tradition, tried to give a tribute to both of them via a poem: “The Yearning” (but of course, I can never be in any way get close to an imitation let alone a justice).

Translation:

Heart craves
once more
such moments relaxed…
when time did
use to fill with
thoughts of a dearest…

Under a soft sun of the fall,
lounged inside the courtyard,
that covering my eyes,
stretching a scarf of yours…
staying lazed on a floor,
in a carefree rest.

Or in the nights of summer,
in chilling gusts of zephyr,
Keeping ourselves up
draped in cold white linens…
Settled on a terrace till late,
just to have all stars gazed.

As amidst a chilling winter,
hiked onto any mountain,
listening to a hush contagious,
echoing from valley and plains…
keeping ourselves hinged to
a passing moment with eyes wet.

Heart craves

Oh Amiable… (Aey Humnava…)

Stapled now as a modern-classic, a beautifully written yearning song by an inspiring poet Sayeed Quadri, sung with an extreme finesse by Papon, for the film: Hamari Adhuri Kahani. The film I didn’t like much, but the songs were quite good as the music was composed by Mithoon, and I like this song more since it introduced me to a gift of Papon, an extremely well-textured voice…

Oh Beloved, come close to me someday… (Kadi aa mil sanwal yaar ve)

A classically composed and beautifully sung Punjabi song by an international band famous for their Sufi songs and classical compositions: Meekal Hassan Band. This song captures an essence of vulnerability, that is outcome of an insuppressible urge which comes into being when the beloved gets close, but goes far away afterwards, leaving the lover in despair… Originally sung by classical singer: Javed Bashir.

Like a HicCuP beloved comes to me (Aave Re Hitchki)

One of the sneakingly heart-touching “I Miss You” song, with flavors of folk romance and moonlit melancholy, sung beautifully by Shankar Mahadevan in Gulzar Sahib‘s penned adaptation of Mirza-Sahiban folklore as a film: Mirzya (2016).

The Long Winter

I found
Leaves shivering in cold,
and showing pattern,
I once traced on your skin…

I found
sky vomiting gold,
searching for tree,
under which we had our first kiss…

I found wind blowing
just to float me away
from today to yesterday…
when your fragrance used to linger on me…

They all reminded me,
how winter once used to be…
of time when nothing cold was painful,
since warmth of your breaths surrounded me…

Even moon used to bow
in an alley we used to meet in…
where I touched your hands first..
stars kissed your feet.

But this is not the winter
in which we weaved our dreams…

We’ve slipped far far away
from the mirror – our axis…
we no longer know what
kept our heart racing…

I keep looking for you,
in my present,
knowing I buried you,
out in the world for centuries
shutting myself in a coffin
holding sands of a last spring.

I found
